The Freak Brothers Will Return for Season Two

The Freak Brothers are back and we sat down with the show’s creator, Courtney Solomon, to see where Franklin, Freddy and Phineas will be heading from here after a fun Season One.

In addition to all the laughs from Season One, The Freak Brothers became the first show to be picked up for a second season by Tubi. The company was purchased by Fox in 2020. Solomon was excited to proportion that feather for the cap with the rest of the team.

“I average, it was great. We love working with the Tubi team and the Fox team, and both of them were like, honestly, super amazing. Just in Season One, it all came together really quickly at the end and everybody did a Herculean job to get it out there and promote it well, and then to have them come back and you know, give us sustain, and Lionsgate, in addition, I want to mention because they are our partners in this thing,” Solomon said.

Solomon called the way the sustain built up steam going into the first season was freaks-appropriate.

Adult animation can be a finicky beast. There have been a lot of laughs over the years, but you’ll find plenty of trash in the gutter. We asked Solomon how thankful he was to see The Freak Brothers being compared to the shows on the cooler end of the spectrum.

“I can’t find words to tell you how much I appreciate that, especially after doing it as a labor of love project that we self-financed and raised money before we ever had Fox or Tubi or Lionsgate or anybody involved with it,” Solomon replied. “So the fact that the fans love it, and that we have a serious set of fans that is sort of like concentrated on The Freak Brothers. It’s all about them. That is the ultimate gratification.”

Solomon certainly isn’t offended by any comparisons. He feels the names that The Freak Brothers are being mentioned alongside are just a testament to the effort they’re putting in to make the show.

When you’re doing what we do, to truly see that, and then to be sort of immediately put into a bar with shows that have broken by an extremely sort of difficult wall to improving makes it already more satisfying, honestly,” Solomon said. “Truly, it’s all love and respect, and our goal now in Season Two is to give them an already better Season Two.”

To help add to that goal, they’ve brought in some new comedy writers. Solomon argues the writers on Season One were great, but they brought in new faces to punch up the humor a bit, in hopes of amping up the already substantial laughs. Now that everyone knows what a Freak Brothers episode is and what the universe looks like, it’s about expanding on that.

Solomon notes the team has been developing the ideas around Season Two for some time.  They were afraid this problem was going to happen, where they would get picked up for another season and then have their backs to the wall to get it done. But they do have a lot of the resources from Season One to recycle. Plenty of time went into building out parts of the universe that will be recycled in Season Two, like the characters themselves and their living room base camp.

“Where we really needed to get ahead of it,” Solomon said. “This is half the battle, as far as I’m concerned, on all television, live-action or adult animation, in any case it is. It’s all about the character. It’s all about the story. You know, it’s all about the writing. What I’m trying to say is, we were able to get ahead on the writing.”

In those early sessions, the team kicked out concepts. They played around with them. Told themselves they could do better. But in the end, Solomon was excited about the stories they’ve already kicked into complete gear for development.

“Then truly started writing some of the scripts, literally at the end of last year,” Solomon said. “So at the minimum when we got this greenlight a week and a half ago, we were able to push the button closest and move certain episodes straight into production, having fully vetted out the writing of those episodes already.”

The new season of The Freak Brothers drops later this year.
