Russia will no longer great number the 2023 international ice hockey championship, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced Tuesday, stating it was concerned for “the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, media, and fans.”

The tournament had been scheduled to run May 5 to May 21, 2023, in St. Petersburg, where plans had been made for a new 23,000-capacity arena. The federation said it reached its decision after a meeting Tuesday in Zurich, because it had “meaningful concerns over the safe freedom of movement of players and officials to, from, and within Russia.”

A new great number for the tournament will be confirmed in May, the federation additional.

The change is the latest move from the sports world following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On Monday, the International Skating Union announced that no international competitions would be held in Russia, including the 2022 Rostelecom Cup. Last week, Wimbledon announced it would not allow Russian and Belarusian players to compete in its upcoming championships that begin in June.
