Jacksonville Jaguars Owner, Shad Khan issued a statement on Tuesday saying that head coach Urban Meyer “must regain” the team’s trust after a video surfaced showing the coach’s behavior in a bar over the weekend.
“I have addressed this matter with Urban. Specifics of our conversation will be held in confidence. What I will say is his conduct last weekend was inexcusable,” Khan said in the statement. “I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect.”
The statement continued, “That will require a personal commitment from Urban to everyone who supports, represents or plays for our team. I am confident he will deliver.”
The statement by Khan comes a few days after videos surfaced across social media, showing Meyer at a bar in Ohio, with a woman dancing close to his lap. The video was posted after the Jaguars lost to the Cincinnati Bengals 24 to 21 on September 30.
On Monday, Meyer discussed the video during a press conference and said, “I just apologized to the team and the staff for being a distraction. It was stupid.”
“I explained everything that happened and owned it, and, you know, just stupid, should not have had myself in that kind of position,” Meyer additional.
During the press conference, Meyer admitted that after the Jaguars’ loss on Thursday, he did not fly back to Jacksonville with the team and instead, stayed in his hometown of Columbus to meet with his family. Meyer said that he went to dinner with family and friends at his restaurant in Ohio, Urban Meyer’s Pint House. Prior to his time with the Jaguars, Meyer spent seven years as the head coach of the Ohio State men’s football team.
“There’s a big group next to our restaurant and they wanted me to come over and take pictures and I did. They were trying to pull me out on the dance floor, screwing around, and I should have left,” Meyer explained during the press conference on Monday.
Meyer also said that he has since apologized to both the team and his family for the incident.
“They were focused on Tennessee and I apologized again for being a distraction, a coach should not be a distraction,” Meyer said in regard to his team.
According to ESPN, shortly after the press conference on Monday, a second video of Meyer surfaced across social media, again showing the Jaguars coach dancing with what appeared to be the same woman from the first video.
Since taking over as head coach, the Jaguars have lost their first four games and are set to confront off against the Tennessee Titans at home on Sunday.
Newsweek was directed to the statement issued by Khan after reaching out to the Jaguars for comment.
